Miss Babs dolls up...

Bryan Burnett | 18:11 UK time, Thursday, 6 November 2008

bb2.jpgAs mentioned on tonight's show I have donned my dinner suit for an awards ceremony that I'm hosting as soon as tonight's show is over. My producer Barbara didin't want to me to feel like I was the only one who made an effort so during the six o clock news she transformed herself into a cross between Mary Marquis and a Strictly contestant. I am seriously impressed, but it does make me think that maybe ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ radio presenters should go back to wearing a dinner suit to host the show. Maybe if Bros ( Brand and Ross) had been done up in dickie bows then their standards wouldn't have slipped they way they did.... bb3.jpg

    On the contrary, it was Brand's dickie that got them into trouble.

  • Comment number 2.

    Don't you mean his winkle? He goes on about it endlessly! Yawn..............

  • Comment number 3.

    Ah Mary Marquis, that brings back memories. I agree with BB, time that presenters smartened up a bit, none of this casual stuff. It's us lsteners who should be lounging around in t-shirts and the like. Looking good Miss Babs!

  • Comment number 4.

    Yes I thought so too! Lookin HOT there Babs!

  • Comment number 5.

    Steady Jim, steady......

  • Comment number 6.

    Glen! Good to have you back. Where have you been?

    Jim Ers - What did you say your job was?

    Maria & Hoppo - Think of The Hives most famous song.

    AFR

    I do believe an apology is due from Julie and Maria.

  • Comment number 8.

    EC: why?

    Julie
    Let's just leave it in last weeks blog and move on!
    Waldorf and Stadler are amusing themselves as ever....

  • Comment number 10.

    Yes you're right Maria. Anyway - wonder who's thinking about going to the GIO Children in Need broadcast on Friday?

  • Comment number 11.

    Norriemaclean is because it is probably the only way he will ever get Gene Clark played - waving money at the GIO Team!

  • Comment number 12.

    Guys - what about songs with great basslines/grooves as a theme? I was listening to Sarah Vaughan doing Peter Gunn earlier today and it got me thinking. I'd suggest stuff like:

    Peter Gunn - Sarah Vaughan
    Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel
    Deeper Underground - Jamiroquai
    Just Like Heaven - The Cure
    Color My XTC - Talisman
    Turn It On Again - Genesis
    Running With The Devil - Van Halen
    Walking On The Moon - The Police

    What would other people go for?

  • Comment number 13.

    Been done - was good - I chose Norman Watt Roy on Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick because he said he thought he was being paid by the note!

    Jim:

    Other bassline/groove songs:

    * Michael Jackson: Billy Jean
    * The Cure: Lovecats
    * Landscape: Einstein A Go-Go
    * Level 42: Living It Up
    * Pink Floyd: Money (of course)
    * The Blues Brothers: B Movie Boxcar Blues
    * Scissor Sisters: Laura
    * Paul Simon: Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes
    * Cream: Sunshine of your Love
    * Mika: Lollipop
    * The Jacksons: Blame it on the Boogie
    * Beats International: Dub Be Good to Me
    * Beck: Go It Alone (and I've a *superb* mashup where this is the groove behind Janis Joplin's Mercedes Benz)
    * The Upsetters: Return of Django
    * Suzanne Vega/DNA: Tom's Diner
    * Adamski: Killer
    * The Soup Dragons: I'm Free
    * Bowie: Golden Years
    * Bowie: Fame
    * Ruben Gonzáles: Quizás, Quizás
    * The Specials: Nelson Mandela
    * Rosemary Clooney: Mambo Italiano
    * Norman Greenbaum: Spirit in the Sky
    * Dave Brubeck: Unsquare Dance (as heard in a number of TV Ads)
    * Art of Noise: Close to the Edit
    * Warren Zevon: Werewolves of London
    * Right Said Fred: Deeply Dippy
    * Queen: Another One Bites the Dust

    Marillion's Kayleigh has a bassline that's apparently simple and solid, but has lots of nice wee subtle touches and flourishes.

    And, for a laugh: U2's With Or Without You seems to have the Magic Roundabout theme as its bassline

    That do for now?

    I feel that I am posting on this blog fgar to much without getting involved in blogs on imaginary themes! Eh even though I just have of course.

    Thanks for Fergal Sharkey last night forgopt how much I love that track....another trip to the loft required!

  • Comment number 16.

    Hi Julie. I've been listening to the show since it was called Summer Of Song and I don't remember that theme being done, but I guess we'll find out the lot when the list is put on the blog.

    How about the most inspiring pop songs? Or the songs that you would have on your Ipod when working out in the gym?

    norriemac,
    hope you enjoyed the Leonard Cohen gig.It was even better than Edinburgh and certainly warmer.When he did Hallelujah I think it put to bed the argument about which is the best version good though the others are.

  • Comment number 18.

    Hi jjj ! Nice of you to ask and I absolutely agree, 3 hrs from an absolute master! Better than I had hoped for to be honest.

    Hope you have a great weekend!

    Julie
    Are you going along on Friday? I am thinking about it as am meeting a friend in Glasgow that night anyway...
    However, I am wondering if the post Christmas meet up would be a better idea for our first get together!!
    Sadly I am assuming AFR won't be able to make it unless he really is living in Kilsyth as the rumour goes...
    Will we have to wear name badges?!
    Maria

    Inspiring songs been done too. I remember the bass one, Chic was my call.

    Maria, you never know......

  • Comment number 21.

    Jim...it was solely a basslines theme and it was a good show. Was quite a few months ago I think. Hate to say it but I think the other 2, or variations on them, have been done too. Don't know how I would remember that but I'm pretty sure I'm correct (I know...sad!). That's not to say the team wouldn't decide to do them again though is it - they regularly duplicate themes, and mostly there are many more good suggestions than get played.

    Maria...Can't go on Friday - prior engagement. Seriously considering going to any post-Christmas do though (AFR / EC or no!).

    Bryan...Since you're doing a Bear night next week, I must ask again (albeit tenuously) for "Barefoot" by k d lang. Perhaps best not to post photos of you and whatever producer's outfits from that night though :0)
