Nerm's Travels In India (Part Two)
Since my last Blog entry I've been joined by D-Code and DJed in Pune (pronounced Poo-ney) and in Indore. The usual response to the first was "oh, cool", the second "what the HELL are you doing there?" I first came to India when I was three, many years ago and Indore stirred memories from then. The gigs, however, were a different story. Pune was immense, some 2000 people packed into a club called Area 51 which was shaped like a 1950's Americana flying saucer
The gig was as tough as the crowd was, a full on commercial loving audience but they soon warmed to the new electro-house D-Code and I were spinning. We moved up to breaks and lost a few people (well, not literally - the club was so packed you could hardly move, let alone get lost!) so we reeled them in with a definite crowd pleaser Flute Fantasy by DJ Nasha. We piled on the electro and the crowd were loving it. We got to breaks via the Midival Punditz tune Don Revisited and took it to Drum & Bass via the classics Splash by Kush and our remix of Desi Rock.
(If you wanna see pictures, head over to )
Soon the audience was confronted by tracks by Logistics, new cuts from Ram Records and, I'm certain, some were singing along to our Post 9/11 Blues remix!
We went harder still as I played a new track by D-Code, that we're releasing next year and the crowd went nuts. The funny thing was that when we DJ we dance and it often helps the audience when they see us as it helps them figure out how to move to the new sounds they're hearing. At this gig we were 20 feet in the air in a tiny DJ booth. When the Drum & Bass kicked in a lot of the audience got excited, didn't know how to move and just started head banging!
The Idore gig was more scary. D and I were planning what to do and we asked all of our friends in Mumbai what to expect. They had no idea. Randolph (aka Funcinternational and producer/guitarist with Pentagram) told us his rural India experiences. Pentagram were on stage at a college gig in central India. After about 20 minutes they noticed the entire venue was split into two with girls on one side and boys on the other. The girls were decked out in saris with flowers in their hair and the boys were in their smarted pressed trousers, jackets, shirts and ties. And they were all going ballistic – not quite knowing what to do or how to move with the music – just losing all control and thrashing themselves about like King Cobras on a barbeque!
It was mental images like that, that accompanied us to Indore.
And guess what? The crowd HAD IT! Again, it was jam packed and we played a mixture of Breaks, House and Electro and it worked well. We took it to Drum & Bass but only managed six tunes before the gig ended. Afterward we were walking through the hotel lobby when two guys ran up: "Hi, I'm Siddharth and this is Sanjeeve. We're the only two f***ers playing Breaks and Drum & Bass in Indore - can you send us some tracks please? We promise we'll play them out and not pass them on or pirate them or anything like that. We're also making music now too"
With promises to keep in touch we went to our hotel rooms and drank the night away, wondering what mad, underground sounds are cooking away and about to emerge from Indore...
