My Favourite Tracks of 2006
2006 has been a year of changes in the Asian music industry. The days of mainstream success for Asian artists seem long gone and we’re moving into an era of independent artists and labels emerging from the underground. There’s been some great tracks that have dominated the dance floor and radio waves. Here are some of my favourites:
Bikram Singh ft. Gunjan - “Kawan”
Produced by Scottish soldiers, Tigerstyle, this slice of Punjabi romance brings together relative newcomer to the scene Bikram Singh with the most underrated female in the game, Gunjan. Their vocals compliment each other well and the production is tight with the right amount of depth to work on the dancefloor. The lyrics tell a story of two lovers that would melt the hearts of all. The Drum & Bass remix also brings a new twist to it, making sure it will tear up any rave. Quality.
Specialist & Tru Skool – “Bhangre ‘Ch”
When I first heard this track it transported me back to the days where Punjabi music was still organic. Live instruments like mandolin, harmonium and sarangi lace this track with a quality that’s rarely heard these days. It’s got great energy and we always drop it on our sets when we wanna get real desi on ‘em. I could’ve almost any track of the Album “Reprazent” as my favourite of the year but this was definitely a stand out song. It still gets play in my car, on our show and on our DJ sets. Classic sounding, with a built to last shelf life.
The Game “One Blood”
“The Saviour of the West Coast” came back bigger and stronger this year with what can only be described as fire! A beat to rival any Hip Hop anthem accompanied by the immaculate flow of The Game ensured that this track became a smash hit. It also inspired a remix with a ton of American rappers which lasted 11 minutes and also made way for a huge UK Remix with 11 of the finest UK Asian MCs representing.
BMD “North Weezee”
North West London stand tall! Simple!
Jay Z – “Show Me What You Got"
The official comeback single from J-Hova sealed his place in Hip Hop History. An almost effortless delivery from Jigga Man brought some excitement back in the game and had all the girls showing us what they got and the rest of us all waving on the chorus.
Fedde le Grande – “Put Your Hands Up”
The re-emergence of house music in 2006 was spearheaded by this anthem. Even though most of us have never been to Detroit, we found ourselves raising our hands for what was described as “a lovely city”. Big bassline and a simple, yet effective hook. Nice!Let me know what your favourite tracks of 2006 are. Peace.

If your going to mention tracks of the year, a number of artists who have made an impact on the scene should be mentioned too:
Fun De Mental
Jay Dhabi
Nirag Chag
Since these artist's have made a number of quality tracks which have been some of my favorite of the year.
Apart from the odd track, was the Asian scene ever mainstream? I don't think so. It's just everyone having a song and dance whenever the odd appearance was made on Top of the Pops.

Jay Dabhi's Mumbai After Dark was THE track of 2006 for me. To take such a girly track from the soundtrack of Bombay and mix it to sound so deep, dark and raw was pure genius. Did anyone hear him on Friction's Reproduced - he was awesome!

Kawan is a wicked track, and one of the best on Bikrams album. The DNB remix also tore up many of the dancefloors and was a very popular track.
Not a massive fan of bhangra, but generally feel Specialit and Tru Skool put out an OK album.
Game – One Blood, although it’s the biggest hip hop track around, I think it’s a bit of a dull record. He’s had better productions even on the album.
Jay Z – Show Me What You Got Me, whenever I hear this record, I always think of that Wrecks N FX track Rompshaker, which sources the same saxophone sample! Not a fan of this Jay Z track, but again there are much better tracks on the album.
Fedde Le Grand – Put Your Hands Up, a fun housey track – much preferred the instrumental than the vocalled up edit for the mass market, and the video is ridiculous!
Some of my best tracks of the year included:
Niraj Chag – Khwaab
PJD – Gidhe Wich Tu Nachdi
Ravaliya – Line of Control
Geiom – Zalim Maar Daala
Plan B – No Good
Jag – Take You There
Lupe Fiasco – Kick Push
