Title: Encounter

My breath misted up the glass as I stared through; I could see nothing but darkness, no one would be in there anyway. I stepped back from the door and looked both ways down the dimly lit corridor- it was strange seeing it empty. There was no noise apart from the eerie hum of the building. Shivering, I reached down and grasped hold of the door handle. It was freezing; it felt as if it hadn't been used for ages, which of course it hadn't' Trying to ignore my heart that was beating steadily against my chest, I turned the handle and let the door swing open to reveal the darkened room.
I felt like a silhouette, standing in the door frame with the light behind me but nothing but darkness in front. Taking a deep breath I walked into the room, I squinted, struggling to see what was in front of me- my eyes weren't used to it being this dark. I turned round and started fumbling around for the light switch, eventually found it and clicked the lights on. For a moment nothing happened. I cursed under my breath. They must have turned the electricity off. Then all of a sudden, I heard a buzzing then the lights started flickering, giving me snapshots of the room every time. The first time, my eyes were just trying to adjust, the second time, something strange happened. From what I saw, there was another girl in the room standing still - her flaming red hair standing out against the white wall behind her - then without warning the lights went out, plunging me into darkness again.
The girl was just a figure of my imagination, I told myself. Reaching over, I flicked the lights on again and this time one started glowing steadily, giving me enough light to see by. I looked over at where the girl had been before, holding my breath and praying I would not be seeing her again. All I saw was the blank wall with old bits of blu-tack and scraps of paper stuck up with pins, the displays having been taken down ages ago. I let out a sigh of relief and lowered my gaze. Suddenly I felt hair in my face; spluttering, I stepped back to see the girl standing in front of me with her back to me.
Strangely, I wasn't scared this time; slowly I walked around to face her. The first thing I noticed was the girl's hair, which was so red it could easily be mistaken for flames. It was billowing out behind her as if it were being blown by wind; she had pale skin and her eyes were closed, not tightly. She looked relaxed- is this what happens when you die, I wondered? However, the girl was not dead, she was humming quietly to herself, a tune that would have sent me to sleep if I had not been so interested. I found myself forgetting everything; I was transfixed by this girl. Suddenly, there was a buzz and the light went out. I blinked. The only humming I could hear now was the building, and I was shivering again, scared. Whatever had just happened was obviously meant to distract me. Shaking my head, I reached into my pocket and brought out my phone. I held down the 'on' button and was greeted by the Nokia welcome tune; if I turned on the light, the girl would be there again, that was one thing I was sure of, and I didn't want that. She had seemed almost not human, her clothes had been very old-fashioned. She had been wearing what seemed to be a Victorian night dress, a creamy colour with short sleeves and no collar. Trying not to dwell on the girl any longer, I turned my attention to my phone, which had started doing very strange things. The screen was bright red and there were letters and symbols on the screen. I knew I should put it down, but I couldn't take my eyes off the screen' I stared at it, it confused me- I leant my head to one side and smiled.
An idea caught me by surprise. I made my way towards the computer and turned it on at the plug, the screen turned on and there was a soft humming coming from it, the same tune the girl had been singing. It calmed me. I smiled and sat down at the computer; there was a circle in the centre of the screen, in it there was a small image of the girl, but her hair was tied up and she was wearing different clothes from before. She had a tattered dress on, but her eyes were still closed and she was smiling. Without realizing what I was doing I started typing; the letters came up in the corner of the screen along with strange symbols. The girls eyes opened; they were bright green and they lit up the whole room. I lifted my hands up to shield my eyes- the light was so blinding, what had I done? All I could remember was the colours; red and green, I had never liked those two colours together, then, I slowly felt myself disappearing, I was still solid but my body felt like air.
