Title: The trials of Tom
by Lewis | in writing, fiction
The curtains open revealing a strong beam of light shining down an a 13 year old boy. The rest of the stage is dark. The boy is Tom, looking sad and embarrassed.
Tom:
This is exactly how I feel. Trapped! Living in the U.K is not as easy for me as it may be for some of you. You see, I'm a young carer and this is my world.
The rest of the lights turn on showing the boy's parents, both blind after an accident. Tom unties himself and walks over to them in their living room and dresses them ready for the day to come.
Tom turns to his Mum.
Tom:
Are you warm enough Mum?
The mother nods.
The stage is set for an outdoor path, where Tom walks his younger brother to school.
Brother:
Why aren't we like them kids? They get to play after school and we are stuck inside caring for Mum and Dad.
Tom kneels down in front of his brother and explains.
Tom:
Because we're not like other kids...we're special. You believe in God don't you? Well God put us on this planet to do the job we are good at. Come on we will be late for school.
The boys walk off towards the school.
The story reflects the lives of people that are young carers and how they struggle to cope.
