Title: The value of (x)

by Jack from Hampshire and Isle of Wight | in writing, fiction

INT. EXAM HALL - DAY

A set of desks and chairs are set up for an exam. Pupils are sat at these desks; there are pupils from many different backgrounds and cultures.
The focal pupil (BOY 1) is a typical teenage boy, sat in the centre of the formation of desks.
We see he is apparently struggling with an exam question. He lays his pen down.

BOY 1 double takes to acknowledge a stunning-looking girl sat at the desk next to him.

BOY 1 (VOICE OVER IN HEAD)
Wow.
I'll be asking her out at the party tonight.

A tough-looking boy sat on the back row. Throws a small scrunched up piece of paper, hitting a girl engrossed in her exam at the front. The bully laughs and high-fives his mate next to him. The girl turns around looking defeated.

EXAM IVIGILATOR/TEACHER (MR JONES)
Shhhh.

BOY 1 shivers

BOY 1 (v.o)
Mr Jones. Just one member of the division named 'experienced adults', pushing us to succeed.

BOY 1 looks around

BOY 1 (v.o)
Cultures from all corners of the globe gathered in one room united with one common goal: to carve a future for ourselves from the blocks of education given to us.

A boy with his ipod plugged in, moves his head mechanically to the rhythm of an R&B tune. A girl secretly texts a friend from under her desk. Other students are sat engrossed in their papers, some calculating sums on their hands.

BOY 1 (v.o)
The commitment to this goal varies

BOY 1's eyes glance towards various typical stereotypes ' a 'chav', an 'emo', a 'goth'.

BOY 1 (v.o)
Why are there so many diverse social groups?
Is there a craving for individuality in these years when we discover who we are; who we want to be?

BOY 1 looks up to find Mr Jones standing over him. They glare at each other.

MR JONES
Hmmmm?

BOY 1 quickly picks up his pen and resumes his exam.

He pauses, and looks up, confusion spread across his face.

BOY 1 (v.o)
What IS the value of (x)?

The script tackles different aspects of teenage life; finding your identity, pressure to succeed and the task of creating your future. I thought of the idea during a week of exams at my school.
