Title: Faye's father

by Sapphire from London | in writing, fiction

A cold body lay, drenched in the moist soil. The rain poured down upon it, and next to it, its lover crying silently'

August 7th 1953
Another wet day, cold dark, and miserable. I gazed at the sky from my window, sat on a small kitchen stool. I could hear the baby stirring, and so I walked silently across the boarded floor to the cot, the baby had not awoken. Good. I had time to get a candle from downstairs, it would be getting darker soon. I fetched the candle and put it in its holder, grabbed the matches and walked back upstairs. As soon as I walked back into the room the baby awoke, I strolled over to my bedside table, replaced the pacifier with the candle and matches. The baby was getting restless so I hurried over to her, I picked her up from her cot, lighter than I remembered, I hushed her 'Dear Faye don't cry, shhhhh'. I rocked her back to sleep, cradled in my arms. I stopped after a while and put her back, and in the distance I heard horses galloping. A carriage pulled up outside the house, none too fancy but I couldn't afford it. A tall man with brown hair and eyes stepped out, dressed in black clothes, they seemed to be fashioned from somewhere other than here, because I did not recognise such clothing. His cape swayed with the wind, and he stepped towards the house. I ran down to open it before he could knock, so the baby would not wake.
