Title: A random rant... on the changes of childhood and beyond.

by Abi from Northamptonshire | in writing, fiction

It a funny thing, growing up'
Every since the dawn of time this has happened, we have grown taller, stronger and mature-er.
You may have not realised this, but our middle aged parents were not always middle aged! They may not confess to this, but maybe once when they were young, they might have found your wrinkle joke funny! But it is not only the growth of wrinkles and the balding of the head that makes someone lose their sense of humour. You see, us humans change our opinions about things with age. Our new and old memories affect our beliefs and personality.
Confused? Okay, I'll bring you back to about a couple of years ago, back to junior school, perhaps'
I'll explain what happened to me'
When I was an innocent 9 year old girl, I thought boys were people who were just nice to look at. I thought kissing was gross. I thought make up and hair dye was for 'Tarty girls'! Smoking was something that teenagers do when their friends push them into it, the teenager has no choice sometimes!
I wanted to be a actress. I thought my mum was cool and singing Atomic kitten in 'Singing together' (Basically it's an assembly) was a fun treat! I was scared to tell anyone I still called my mum 'Mummy' and my Dad 'Daddy', I was scared to tell anyone apart from my best friend that I still played with Barbie dolls! I feared that people would consider me 'babyish'! I also swore that I would stay best friends with my best friend for life!

Okay, now lets fast forward 3 years'
When I was a moody 12 year old. I thought boys were people that were nice to look at, 'Go out with' and Snog. (Well, for other people, that is, I only had 2 boyfriends and they all were, shall we say' were all shorter then me and had facial deformities' Each one lasted at most a day.)
I thought make up was Tarty, pink was gross, smoking was something all the Chavs did to look cool, Popular girls were annoyingly perfect and are known for their bitchiness and criticism ! I hated everyone.
I wanted to be a journalist, My best friend from my junior school years had disappeared from existence, I sneaked on eyeliner to look grungy and my Mum and Dad were so not cool!!!

You, see ' My parents said themselves I had completely changed! No as much physically either! I still had mousy brown hair in no particular style and a dazed look on my face! But I lost my sense of humour and hated anything that reminded me of happiness! I was your typical pre teen!

Anyway, Now I'm at the grand age of 15 (???) I have had another growth spurt, check it out'
I think boys are funny and good friends including my boyfriend of 4 months who is just great (Plus he's not shorter then me! I don't care in the slightest if someone calls me strange or babyish! Popular girls are human and most of them have acne. Smokers smoke cause they're addicted, they gave up on looking cool after their teeth started going yellow and black and they continually stink of stale smoke!
Make up is acceptable essential for me, I love dying my hair different colours! I love people and am working for a career in health and social care'

But who knows what you'll be like when you're older then you are now, maybe you'll be just like your parents or completely different!
Maybe I'll be an author or just a bitter old woman! People change every few years and sometimes in a space of a day!!!
This kind of makes me sad. Because of this, we drift apart from our friends we were once so close too. We look hypocritical! We mourn for our old selves. As I want to be junior school young again. So that I don't make the mistakes that I did! But then I wonder if id be exactly the same person. I might be meaner, or more shallow etc'

Throughout this story I've got to confess, I've spoken a lot about myself, the reason I wrote this was mainly to point out to myself the above fact applies with everyone.
People change'
