Whilst researching Mexican culture and nature, I stumbled upon this beautiful picture of a flower that is indigenous to Mexico. Its rich and vibrant colouring and shape inspired me to design this dress.I chose to use a deep scarlet silk for the "petals" and bodice of the dress, with the skirt puffing out due to underlying layers of red taffeta. I added yellow and orange beads to the edges of the dress, so that it was reminiscent of the flowers. I was drawn to the sharp contrast between the lustrous reds and bright yellows of the flower, so I emphasised it with yellow patent peep-toe heels.I wanted the skirt to be the main feature of the dress, with its soft yet sculptural design creating an interesting silhouette. The nipped in waist is, in my opinion, a refreshing alternative to all of the androgyny and "slouchiness" seen on the runway and on the street this autumn/winter. I also made the dress quite short so it is fun and flirty, but still glamorous.My muse for this design was the singer Kate Nash because I know she loves clothes that give her a womanly figure, and because I thought the colours would go wonderfully with her chestnut hair and pale skin.
