My design was inspired by many things. The outline of the dress itself was inspired by the heat of Mexico, there are layers of light, flowing chiffon and no back of the garment to keep the wearer cool. The colour palette I chose was red, green and white because these are the colours of the Mexican flag. I chose a print because they are in style at the moment and are often used in Matthew Williamson collections; it is a floral print to show that there is more to the wildlife of Mexico than cacti! Traditional Mexican dresses feature lots of ruffles and frills which I wanted to incorporate without going too over the top, so I added them to the waistline and neckline, softening the colouring. I wanted to pick up on the current trend of extremely fitted waistlines without making the wearer uncomfortable, so I chose to have a statement red strip on the waist to do this. There is also one of the Mexican national symbols, the eagle, in the centre of this. The way that the colouring is uniquely shaded is inspired by the work of Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo. The shoes I have designed are inspired by a picture i saw of a small Mexican girl wearing traditional red pumps at a festival. I updated this idea to the very popular ankle boots, made from the also fashionable patent leather. The bag is inspired by the old fashioned Volkswagen Beetle. This is because it remained in production in Mexico until 2003, mainly being used as an affordable taxi for Mexico City!
