We've kept chickens for a few years now as pets and, as a bonus, providers of cruelty-free eggs. They roam around our garden as they please. This is a Welsummer - a pure-bred hen. She was one of the first we got, and she was an outcast of the flock, so she was really friendly towards us - not to the point where we could pick her up, but enough to eat out of our hands. She was also a flier - we don't clip their wings at all, and so when our hens are young, they can fly up to about 7ft off the ground. This was enough to get over the hedge. She got lost in a neighbours garden one night, and got eaten by a fox.
