Switch-ons took place across the city in November with comedy duo, the Krankies, and sporting legend, Rachel Heyhoe-Flint, among the celebrities involved.

Theatre

The Grand's annual panto is the ever popular Dick Whittington starring Dani Harmer, TV's Tracy Beaker, ex-Eastenders villain Dirty Den Leslie Grantham and other stars until January 27, 2008. Box office: 01902 429212.

Wolverhampton Christmas Festival

The city is also enjoying its third popular Christmas Festival with the heart of the event centred on a continental Christmas market in the newly refurbished Dudley Street and Queen Square area of the city centre, taking place until Friday December 21st.

The market opens from 10am until 9pm Monday to Saturday, giving visitors the opportunity to visit after work to sample a variety of hot and cold food and drink, including German gl眉hwein (mulled wine) together with beer and sausages from the schwenkengrill , which is a charcoal swivelling grill.

Traders from France, Germany, Italy, Holland and Belgium have stalls at the festival.

On Sundays the market opens between 10.30 am to 4.30 pm.

As well as food and drink there are toys, sweets and a wide variety of gifts for the whole family. Other festive goods include German sausages, Dutch cheeses, cakes and waffles, pastries, leather goods, cashmere and knitwear, French perfumes, Italian silks and much more.

Appealing to the whole family, the Christmas Festival features music and street entertainment and children can pay a visit to Santa in his grotto in Queen Square.

The grotto will be open between 10am and 7pm Monday to Saturday and 10.30am to 4.30pm on Sunday.

Other events

At Bilston Craft Gallery until Saturday January 5, 2008 the Christmas showcase exhibition, featuring designer ceramics, takes place. Contact 01902 552507 for more details.

At Wolverhampton Art Gallery and Museum, the 2007 Memory Box event takes place on Friday December 28, 2007 from 10.30-12pm - a free event suitable for children under the age of 11.

At Wolverhampton Racecourse, festive meetings include Saturday December 22, 2007; Wednesday December 26, 2007; Friday December 28, 2007 and Saturday December 29, 2007 with the first race at 7pm each day (except Boxing Day - first race 1.30pm. Contact 0870 220 0140 for tickets and more information.

Late night shopping

Until Friday December 21st shops open until 9pm every night except for Saturdays when they are open until 7pm and on Sundays between 10.30am and 4.30pm.

A host of other activities have been taking place at organisations across the city such as Christmas workshops at Bilston craft gallery, theatre productions at Arena Theatre, Christmas party nights at Wolverhampton racecourse, live music at the Wulfrun Hall and carol services at Moseley Old Hall.
