A Viking grave

Description

In this clip, an archaeologist explains to children visiting a museum why the discovery of a Viking grave is important. This is because in Viking burials, objects important to the person were buried along with the body. These objects tell archaeologists a lot about the buried person. For example, a sickle found in one grave is evidence that Vikings could be farmers as well as fighters and raiders.

Classroom Ideas

Students could discuss the objects described in the clip, and why they were special to the Viking. Recap what the objects tell us about the life of the Viking. Students could be given a number of objects that are special to a parent or teacher, and asked what they think this tells them about their parent鈥檚 or teacher鈥檚 life. Students could draw their own selection of special objects to share with others. To conclude, students could be asked if their special items were similar to the Viking鈥檚 and why.
