The Norse settlement of Jarlshof
Description
An explanation of how the Norse settlement of Jarlshof in Shetland, Scotland, has taught archaeologists about the Norse and how they lived. The Norse settled at Jarlshof because it was near the sea, had a supply of fresh water and the land was fertile. Stones on the beach helped them build longhouses. Objects found at Jarlshof such as bronze jewellery, net weights, games and drawings reveal that the Norse were farmers, fishermen and craftsmen as well as raiders.
Classroom Ideas
Students could be given pictures of each of the items shown in the clip as well as some additional items. Students could also be given a list of object names and their uses, so that students can try to match the picture of the object to its name and purpose.
Students could form pairs to check each others work and discuss any they disagree on, giving justification for their own decision and potentially persuading their partner to change their mind.
