The Seder meal

Description

The Seder is a Jewish meal that has been eaten for thousands of years during the Pesach or Passover festival. It is eaten to remember the Jewish enslavement in Egypt and the quick escape led by Moses. Wine or grape juice is drunk to remember the tears of the slaves, among other examples.

Classroom Ideas

After watching the clip, students could discuss why the Seder meal is important to Jews. Lead them to the understanding that it reminds Jewish people of the escape of their ancestors from Egypt. Students could think of events which they would like to remember from their lives as they get older. What could they do to help them remember?

Students could go on to tell their own story of this important event through the use of symbolism in food. What food would they prepare for a meal to celebrate the event, and what would the food represent? Students could prepare a menu to desribe the meal.
