Looking at the reasons for race riots and the rise of the Ku Klux Kan in 1920s America. The growth of the Klan was not all to do with African Americans. Mass immigration, particularly Catholic immigration, also contributed to its expansion.

Students can consider the history of immigration to the USA, both past and present. Look in more detail at the attitude and activities of the Ku Klux Klan. Look at reasons why people joined, based on the negative factors they wished to prevent and the positive factors they wanted to benefit from. Compare the extreme form of patriotism and religion views represented by the Klan with right wing movements in other countries; Nazism, Fascism in Italy and the UK, Falange in Spain.
