Children's Crusade

Description

Foot soldiers of the civil rights movement describe the ‘Children’s Crusade’ march that took place in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963. The march was broken up by police using batons, water cannons and dogs.

Classroom Ideas

Discuss the methods of the civil rights movement. In particular consider how successful the policy of non-violence was in the face of violent opposition. Look at archive images and reporting of the march at the time, in the USA and around the world and debate why many see this as an important turning point.
