I know it's not your favourite thing but I've got so much to do.

Speaker 2: Sure thing.

Speaker 2: We've got £182.50 here in cash.

Speaker 1: Now can you check the amount is right?

Because sometimes the till can be up or down.

Speaker 2: (TO AUDIENCE) OK, so to check this I am going to need to get the till and card machine printouts.

I've checked the cash. That's £182.50.

Then I'll need to use that information to find out what today's cash takings should be.

Speaker 1: (TO AUDIENCE) OK, so I need to check if the cash takings I have here are what they should be.

I have my main till printout here, which gives the overall takings for the day: £235.75.

I can see we took £51.75 on cards today.

So if I take this off the overall takings the remainder will be how much we took in cash… equals £184.00.

Oh dear. I only have £182.50, so how much are we out?

£184.00 minus £182.50. I can do that in my head. It's £1.50.

Speaker 2: (TO OTHER PEOPLE) What are you doing Mathilde?

Speaker 1: Just cashing up but the till seems to be down.

Speaker 2: Maybe the customer forgot to pay for something or there was a mix-up with the petty cash?

Speaker 1: I'll check the petty cash.

2 receipts from today, £4.75 for stationery and £1.50 for milk. That's £6.25.

Speaker 2: Usually with petty cash, we start with £20.00.

So if we take that away from the 20 we can see how much cash there should be in there.

Speaker 1: Equals 13.75.

Speaker 2: £15.25… so we've got too much money here.

Speaker 1: So… we've got £15.25 but we should have £13.75 which equals £1.50.

Speaker 2: Oh, this must be it then, the milk.

Someone probably took the money from the till and not replaced it from the petty cash.

Speaker 1: Sorted. Thanks for that Annie.

Speaker 2: OK, I'll leave you to it.

Speaker 1: So how did you get on Mathilde?

Speaker 2: Not too bad. I looked at my main till printout here, which said we had made £235.75 today, so then from that, I took away what we had made from card, which was £51.75, which gave us £184.00.

But we've got here £182.50, which means we are £1.50 down.

Speaker 1: Have you noted down that we're out?

Speaker 2: Well actually, I was talking to Annie and we reckon someone bought milk using money from the till and forgot to replace it from the petty cash.

Speaker 1: I think we need to email everyone to remind them to use money from the petty cash and not from the till.

Speaker 2: Sounds good.
