Speaker 1: Hi Mathilde. Are you all right to help do the cashing up today?
I know it's not your favourite thing but I've got so much to do.
Speaker 2: Sure thing.
Speaker 1: Thank you.
Speaker 2: We've got 拢182.50 here in cash.
Speaker 1: Now can you check the amount is right?
Because sometimes the till can be up or down.
I've got to dash so can you also make sure you put all the details into this spreadsheet on here? Thanks Mathilde.
Speaker 2: (TO AUDIENCE) OK, so to check this I am going to need to get the till and card machine printouts.
I've checked the cash. That's 拢182.50.
Then I'll need to use that information to find out what today's cash takings should be.
Test your knowledge with this activity.
Speaker 1: (TO AUDIENCE) OK, so I need to check if the cash takings I have here are what they should be.
I have my main till printout here, which gives the overall takings for the day: 拢235.75.
I can see we took 拢51.75 on cards today.
So if I take this off the overall takings the remainder will be how much we took in cash鈥 equals 拢184.00.
Oh dear. I only have 拢182.50, so how much are we out?
拢184.00 minus 拢182.50. I can do that in my head. It's 拢1.50.
Speaker 2: (TO OTHER PEOPLE) What are you doing Mathilde?
Speaker 1: Just cashing up but the till seems to be down.
Speaker 2: Maybe the customer forgot to pay for something or there was a mix-up with the petty cash?
Speaker 1: I'll check the petty cash.
2 receipts from today, 拢4.75 for stationery and 拢1.50 for milk. That's 拢6.25.
Speaker 2: Usually with petty cash, we start with 拢20.00.
So if we take that away from the 20 we can see how much cash there should be in there.
Speaker 1: Equals 13.75.
Speaker 2: 拢15.25鈥 so we've got too much money here.
Speaker 1: So鈥 we've got 拢15.25 but we should have 拢13.75 which equals 拢1.50.
Speaker 2: Oh, this must be it then, the milk.
Someone probably took the money from the till and not replaced it from the petty cash.
Speaker 1: Sorted. Thanks for that Annie.
Speaker 2: OK, I'll leave you to it.
Speaker 1: So how did you get on Mathilde?
Speaker 2: Not too bad. I looked at my main till printout here, which said we had made 拢235.75 today, so then from that, I took away what we had made from card, which was 拢51.75, which gave us 拢184.00.
But we've got here 拢182.50, which means we are 拢1.50 down.
Speaker 1: Have you noted down that we're out?
Speaker 2: Well actually, I was talking to Annie and we reckon someone bought milk using money from the till and forgot to replace it from the petty cash.
Speaker 1: I think we need to email everyone to remind them to use money from the petty cash and not from the till.
Speaker 2: Sounds good.
Speaker 1: OK, thank you.
