Communicating with sign language

Description

Shaun, a young deaf boy, shows us how he uses sign language and lip reading to communicate. His classmates have been attending a sign language club and show us how they have learnt how to say a few basic words. We see him playing with friends, one of the boys is also deaf. Shaun uses sign language to recite a poem all about sign language to end the clip.

Classroom Ideas

After watching this clip the students could be encouraged to discuss the ways in which Shaun is the same as other boys his age, as well as what makes him different. They could consider the steps taken by the other students to help to make Shaun feel less different and left out.

Students could also work in pairs to find three things that they have in common, and three things that are different about them. This could be used as a prompt to discuss other similarities and differences, and how we can try to ensure that within a group, everyone feels valued and respected. Students could form a class team that everyone can be part of. They could create their own class team t-shirt or badge and make up their own song or cheer. This could help students to bond and make everyone feel valued and part of a team.
