What is bullying?

Description

Several children provide an introduction to bullying. They explore two types of bullying - emotional bullying where victims are excluded or targeted with unkind remarks and physical bullying which includes violence. The children explain the effects it has on them and how it makes them feel.

Classroom Ideas

The question from this clip, 鈥榃hat is bullying?鈥 could be written on the board, and each student given a sticky note on which to write their response. Students could then share their responses as they stick these onto the board. Give the students cards with a number of bullying behaviour scenarios written on them, these could also have pictures for younger students. Working in small groups or pairs, students could be asked to organise these into emotional and physical abuse.

Students could also explore the saying, 鈥楽ticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me.鈥 They could be asked to describe what this means and think about whether name-calling does hurt someone. Ask students to share experiences of when they were called names, and describe how they felt. They could consider how name-calling causes harm in a different way to physical violence. A new saying could be developed in the class, such as 鈥楽ticks and stones may break my bones but names will break my heart鈥. Students could make posters to display their new saying.
