Scotland and the slave trade

Description

By about 1770, Liverpool had become the biggest slaving port in Britain, and Glasgow a major port for the tobacco trade. As well as those directly involved in the slave trade, many other merchants, bankers and workers profited indirectly.

Classroom Ideas

Investigate how Scotland benefitted from the slave trade. Produce lists of direct benefits, secondary trades and industries, and broader social and economic changes that resulted from profits of the slave trade. Look for evidence of links to the trade in different locations around Scotland, possibly with Glasgow as a particular focus.
