Creating strong images in writing
Description
A man uses descriptive language to report a sighting of the Loch Ness monster to a police officer. Interesting and poetic dialect describes what he saw and similes are used to create an impact with the audience. The conclusion explains how we can create strong images in our writing by using adjectives, similes and nonsense words.
Classroom Ideas
Students could recap the Scottish man鈥檚 and the policeman鈥檚 description of events. If possible, a written version of these could be shared with students. Which do students prefer and why? Students could be asked to identify the three things this clip states are needed to create strong images in writing 鈥 adjectives, similes and nonsense words. Each of these could be assigned a colour and students could highlight each kind in the text. They could also do this for another example of a strong image from a text being shared by the class or a reading group.
