The 1960s fashion revolution

Description

Fashion became far-out and fun in the 1960s. The clip explores why young people wanted to break away from their conservatively dressed parents. Mary Quant led the revolution in female fashion with her new wave designs, miniskirts became shorter and shorter. Boys meanwhile abandoned the uniform and haircut of the old National Service days to join the mods and the rockers, two conflicting British youth groups of the 1960s.

Classroom Ideas

Students could be given a selection of images depicting fashion from the 20th century up to the present day. Working in groups, students could explore and discuss these fashion styles and work together to order these on a timeline. Groups could then come together to discuss their conclusions and see where there are similarities and differences.

Students could conduct further research into 1960s fashion, collecting images from books, magazines and online sources. The images could be used to design and create their own swinging sixties outfit. A fashion show could be hosted to share these outfits.
