Talking about types of houses and their location

To ask someone where they live, you can use the following question:鈥

  • Tu habites o霉? - Where do you live?鈥

To say where you or other people live, use the correct form of habiter (to live) followed 鈥巄y the type of house/flat. You can also give details about the location of your house/flat. For example:鈥

  • J鈥檋abite dans 鈥巙ne maison jumel茅e 鈥巇ans une ville 鈥- I live in a semi-detached house in a town.
  • Tu habites dans 鈥巙n appartement 鈥巇ans la banlieue - You live in a flat in the suburbs.
  • Elle habite dans 鈥巙ne maison 鈥幟 la campagne鈥 - She lives in a house in the countryside. 鈥

You can describe your house using such as grand(e) (big), petit(e) (small), 鈥moderne (modern), vieux/vieille (old). Most adjectives need to go after the noun in 鈥嶧rench, but some adjectives go before the noun. These are often called the BAGS 鈥巃诲箩别肠迟颈惫别蝉. BAGS stands for Beauty, Age, Goodness and Size, and examples of these 鈥巃djectives are:鈥

Where I live - places in the town

To ask someone what there is in their town, you can say:鈥

  • Qu鈥檈st-ce qu鈥檌l y a dans ta ville? - What is there in your town?鈥

To reply, you can say dans ma ville, il y a (in my town, there is/there are) or il n鈥檡 a pas de 鈥庘(there is no) and then say what there is (or isn鈥檛) in your town. For example:鈥

  • Dans ma ville il y a 鈥巙n centre commercial - In my town there is a 鈥巗hopping centre鈥.
  • Dans mon village 鈥巌l n鈥檡 a pas de centre sportif - In my village there isn't a sports 鈥巆entre.鈥
  • Dans la ville la plus 鈥巔roche, 鈥庘巌l y a un supermarch茅 - In the nearest town there is a 鈥巗upermarket.

To ask someone what they can do in their town, you can say:鈥

  • Qu鈥檈st-ce qu鈥檕n peut faire dans ta ville? - What can you do in your town?鈥

To answer and talk about what you can do in a town, you can use on peut (you can), 鈥巉ollowed by an such as aller (to go), regarder (to watch) or jouer (to play).

  • Dans ma ville, on peut aller au parc - In my town, you can go to the park.鈥
  • On peut faire les courses au supermarch茅 - You can do the shopping at the 鈥巗upermarket.鈥
  • On peut regarder un film au cin茅ma - You can watch a film at the cinema.鈥
  • On peut manger au restaurant - You can eat in a restaurant.鈥
