From the Match of the Day studio, Gary Lineker uses the context of football to demonstrate how to work out ratios. He introduces us to MOTD Kickabout presenter, Ben Shires, who explains what ratio means, using the example of two sets of football supporters at a match. Gary explains how to work out ratios using more football-related examples. These include ratios of fans in the crowd, goals scored and times spent by teams defending and attacking. Gary poses a question on ratio for the viewer to work out against a 30-second timer, followed by a visual demonstration of how to complete the problem.

An engaging and entertaining real-life example to use as an introduction to ratio. Show the clip and stop at relevant points to consolidate understanding with further explanations or examples. Children then could be given a selection of recent football results from league tables and asked to work out ratios of goals scored. During PE lessons, penalty shoot-outs could be held, scores recorded, and ratios of the results worked out. Children could research the crowd attendance at cup finals over the past few years and use the figures to create ratios. Children could also use recent league tables to calculate ratio of goals scored compared to goals conceded.
