Building sculptures out of snow and ice
Description
Winter in Sweden. Competitions are held to make sculptures out of snow. Every year a hotel is built entirely of snow and ice. Snow is blown onto a metal frame. Once the frame is removed the snow is smoothed and ice pillars are carved to support the roof. Everything inside is made out of ice including the beds, bar, glasses and tables.
Classroom Ideas
Students could use this clip as stimulus to study freezing and melting. Students could investigate freezing and melting in the classroom by filling ice cube trays with water and putting a small object in each one. Once frozen these could be put into clear plastic cups or tubs and students could observe the melting process. These ice cubes could be placed at different areas around the classroom 鈥 in a cupboard, by the window, or on top of a radiator 鈥 and the temperature in this area taken. Challenge students to reflect on how temperature affects the speed the ice cubes melted at, and how long it took the object inside to be freed. Students could also use this experiment to be introduced to the terms 鈥榮olid鈥 and 鈥榣iquid鈥 and identify examples of each.
