Choosing the right material to make shoes - animation (signed)

Description

An animation of the story of Cinderella. The Fairy Godmother is trying to decide on the best material to make shoes from. She considers fair testing and keeps the three materials the same size. She weighs them choosing the 鈥榖iggest is best鈥 approach.

Classroom Ideas

Did the Fairy Godmother pick the best possible material for Cinderella鈥檚 shoes? Students could consider whether the Fairy Godmother鈥檚 test really was fair when investigating which material to make the shoes from and why it went wrong. Students should note that the test was fair but she made an error when analysing her results. Students could take note of her results and make their own bar graph to display the information. They could then analyse this correctly and say which is lightest.

Students could be asked to bring their favourite pair of shoes into class and discuss the materials these are made of. They could consider why each is an effective material for a pair of shoes. They could also make some silly suggestions of materials that would not make good shoes and challenge a partner to say why this is. From their discussions students could create a list of desirable properties for a material to be suitable for use in a shoe. They could then choose one of these, such as waterproof, and design their own fair test to investigate this property in different materials.

These findings could then be used to design their own pair of shoes for Cinderella. They could send these to her Fairy Godmother with a persuasive letter describing why she should use their shoe design.
