Who makes our laws?

Description

Laws are decided on by a combination of the Scottish Parliament and the Parliament in Westminster. Proposals for new laws are raised, debated and voted upon by MPs or MSPs. Those that are approved become law. Some aspects of Scots law are based on principles laid down many years ago and have been developed by the legal decisions that judges come to in specific cases. In this way, judges too contribute to law making.

Classroom Ideas

The clip could lead into investigation of specific laws and their background. Students could be encouraged to form groups to discuss the question 鈥榳hy do we need laws?鈥 The 鈥榣eader鈥 of the group could then report back to the rest of the class.
