Why did the Romans build walls?

Description

Hadrian鈥檚 Wall and the Antonine Wall are more than just walls. They are defensive structures with a series of forts along them, built when it was thought that the Roman invasion of Caledonia was costing too much. The walls contained stones with Latin inscriptions telling us who built them.

Classroom Ideas

The students could investigate the height and length of Hadrian鈥檚 Wall and the Antonine Wall. What kind of building materials were used? Students could locate both of these walls on a map of Britain, and they could be asked to consider why they might have been built in these locations.

Students could also look at images of the remains of each of these walls and explore what the ruins tell us about life there.
