Did the Romans invade Scotland?

Description

In Roman times, there was no such country as Scotland. The Romans knew this part of the world as Caledonia. Evidence such as walls, forts, sculptures and other artefacts prove that the Romans did reach southern Caledonia. While some of the tribes living there attempted to resist the Romans, most of the tribes probably accepted the Roman invasion and lived peacefully alongside them.

Classroom Ideas

Students could explore who lived in Scotland at this time. They could research the tribes that lived in Caledonia, and sort these into those that surrendered to the Romans and those who fought back. Students could role-play a meeting of a tribe facing Roman invasion. Will they settle or fight? What would be the advantages or disadvantages of each of those options? Students could work in groups to decide what they would do, and then try to convince the rest of the 鈥榯ribe鈥, or class.
