Life as a Roman soldier
Description
A Roman soldiers takes us on a tour of a Roman barracks. We see where the soldiers ate and slept. They had a tough training schedule, including a 26 mile run every month. This clip also describes the reasons that the Romans left Britain and what happened to those who stayed behind.
Classroom Ideas
Discuss with students all of the activities shown in the clips that Roman soldiers take part in. List these on the board and then ask students to arrange these into a daily timetable. Ask students to take on the role of a centurion and plan their centuries training programme and daily activities. Ask students to consider how much time they will spend training, how can you ensure the soldiers don鈥檛 get too tired, is it important to keep the soldiers happy? Students could then present their timetables to students.
