Guru Nanak

What Sikhs believe

  • Sikhs believe in one God. They call God Vaheguru.

  • They believe that God made everyone equal.

  • Sikhs believe it is important to help others because everybody is equal.

  • Sikhism was started by Guru Nanak many years ago. He is still very important to Sikhs.

  • Seva is important to Sikhs. It means ‘selfless service’, or helping people without any reward.

How Sikhs show care

  • Sikhs do in different ways, such as helping people in the community, donating money or helping at the gurdwara, the Sikh place of worship.

  • Many Sikhs help to prepare and serve a free vegetarian meal, called langar. This is an example of seva.

  • Langar is shared at the . It is for everybody of any faith and belief.

  • Helping to serve langar helps Sikhs stay close to God. Everybody eats langar together on the floor to show that they are equal.
