Key beliefs in Islam
Muslims believe in one God, Allah, who has many characteristics. Muhammad was the final prophet of Islam, to whom God revealed the Qur鈥檃n. There are two main branches of Islam, called Sunni and Shi鈥檃.

Islam means 鈥渟ubmission to God鈥. Muslims believe in one God, Allah, and follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, Allah鈥檚 messenger. Muhammad received the Qur鈥檃n, the Islamic holy book, from Allah.
Practices in Islam
Within Islam, there are compulsory duties that Muslims must try to carry out. All Muslims follow the Five Pillars of Islam. For Sunni Muslims, the Five Pillars are the core duties of Islam. Shi鈥檃 Muslims follow the Five Pillars plus five additional duties, and together these are called the Ten Obligatory Acts.
