King Tutankhamun

Description

A wall painting of Tutankhamun comes to life. He tells us that he ruled Egypt for a short time but was a lucky king because he has all his treasures to take with him into the afterlife. He believes that when he goes for the day of judgement and when they weigh his heart against the feather of truth, they will see that he was a fair and truthful ruler. His scarab amulet will protect his heart so that he will pass safely into the gracious afterlife.

Classroom Ideas

After watching the clip, students could ask: 鈥淲hat did the Ancient Egyptians believe about the afterlife?鈥 Students could use books, digital resources and the web to conduct research. Photographs of wall-paintings from the period are particularly useful as sources. Students could create paintings that show the progress of the soul as understood by the Egyptians. They could focus on the image of the deceased鈥檚 heart being placed on a set of scales, so it can be weighed up against the feather of truth.
