Counting to 10
Let's practise counting on and back to 10.
Example 1
There are 4 pandas drinking at a lake. Then 2 more come along to join them.
How many pandas were at the lake at first?
First there were 4 pandas at the lake.
How many more then came to the lake?
Then another 2 more were added.
How many pandas are at the lake now?
Now there are 6 pandas altogether.
Let's count them:
There are now 6 pandas.
The last number or largest number tells you how many there are in the group altogether.
Example 2
Here are 2 bricks.
Here are 3 more bricks.
How many bricks are there altogether?
To find out, add the two groups of bricks together.
Here is the same problem as a part whole model.
Push the two groups together into the empty ring.
How many bricks are there altogether?
Find the answer by counting all the bricks.
There are 5 blocks altogether.
2 and 3 makes 5.
Another way to show what happened is to write the numbers into the circles.
The number sentence looks like this.
2 + 3 = 5
