Continuity editing
When editing the film, make sure that your edit follows the rules of continuity editing.
When cutting from one angle to another, characters鈥 body language should remain consistent and props should remain in place.
You should also make sure that there are no unintentional jump cutA sudden and abrupt transition which usually occurs within a single scene..
Editing pace
Think carefully about the pace of your edit and vary the speed and timing of your cuts, if need be.
A romantic love scene might work better if you use few cuts and longer takes but a car chase might soon become boring if the pace of the editing is too slow.
Additional editing techniques
Most editing packages contain additional effects which can be applied to your footage.
The range of features will vary from package to package, but the following are common and may be of use:
Visual filters
Some editing packages have a series of built-in looks which you can apply to a shot.
The most common filter type will allow you to quickly change the colour and brightness of a shot.
A 'day for night' filter might allow you to quickly make a shot taken during daylight hours look like a night time shot.
Other filters might offer simpler effects such as simply turning colour footage into black and white.
Speed effects
Most editing packages will also allow you to change the speed of a clip.
You may be able to slow down a clip so that it takes longer to play. This might be useful to extend a moment of tension or high drama.
You can also speed up footage to create an impression of super-fast motion.
Speed effects are easy to apply but, if you are planning to use them, shoot some test footage and experiment with it before committing to it.
If you intend to slow down footage, try to shoot it with a high shutter speedThe length of time film or digital sensor in a camera is exposed to light.. This will give you crisp footage which will look better.
