Knowledge and Understanding questions
These questions can be worth 4, 6, or 8 marks. There are two types of questions: Describe in detail and Explain in detail
For Describe in detail questions you need to describe facts about the issue in question, such as how MSPs represent constituents.
For Explain in detail questions you need to explain why something is or why something happens, such as why the First Minister is powerful.
When answering a Knowledge and Understanding question, no matter how many marks it is worth, any developed point that you make can gain up to three marks.
How many marks you get depends on the detail, accuracy, relevancy and quality of your answer. A fourth mark can be gained if you explain how different factors interact with each other or if you provide analysis.
The SEE method
Different teachers will recommend different ways to achieve the most marks but a popular method is SEE: Statement, Explanation, Example.
