Mask work
What happens when you wear a mask for performance? The style of the mask will contribute something to your work but what's interesting here is what you lose. If we can't see your face, we're dependent on voice and movement to understand the situation. If the work is silent, the movement becomes the sole means of articulating meaning. You may want to use big gestures to compensate for the loss of facial expression. You can also focus on the small details too such as the turn of your head, looking down or looking up and the way you hold out your arms.
What if a character in a mask is silent but must convey intense fear to the audience but not to the other person onstage? The actor could move their arm that is resting on a chair, into a clenched fist to imply this emotion. You may or may not want the impact of masks in your production, but working with a mask is a very good exercise to improve your movement.
