Dot maps
Dot maps show information as individual spots on a map. Each dot might represent more than one of something. Dot maps are often used to show population distribution.
When describing dot maps, you should include:
- The highest and lowest amounts.
- A comparison of different areas.
- Any anomalies i.e. things that you would not expect to see.
Question
Describe the population distribution of Australia.
Compare this map with the dot map above. (Hint: name cities and regions, compare coasts and inland)
Most people tend to live on the coast in Australia. For example, the main cities like Sydney, Perth and Melbourne are all located on the coast. There are very few people living in central Australia. For example parts of the Northern Territory and Western Australia have very few people living there.
Question
Why do you think more people live on the coast rather than inland in Australia?
It is easier to trade goods in coastal locations. Coastal locations tend to be cooler due to a breeze from the sea. Central Australia is a desert so it is hard for things to grown and a lack of water making it hard for people to live there.
