A power is a way of writing a number that is multiplied by itself. A root is the opposite of this. It is a way of writing a number that can be divided into another number multiplied by itself.

Powers

A power (also known as an or exponent) is a way of writing a number that has been multiplied by itself:

  • \(2 \times 2\) can be written as 22 (two squared)
  • \(2 \times 2 \times 2\) can be written as 23 (two cubed)
  • \(2 \times 2 \times 2 \times 2\) can be written as 24 (two to the power of 4), and so on

The small floating digit is known as the power, index number or exponent.
