After Mary fled to England, she was kept imprisoned for many years. She was accused of being involved in a number of plots against Elizabeth I. She was executed in 1587.

Elizabeth hesitated to sign Mary's death warrant. Elizabeth did not want to be the first to execute a Queen, especially one who was related to her.
However, Mary鈥檚 involvement in the Babington Plot, led Elizabeth to believe that Mary was too much of a threat alive.

Mary was arrested in September 1586, and held at Fotheringay Castle until her trial.
She was charged with treason for her involvement in the Babington Plot.
She was convicted on 25 October 1586, and sentenced to death.
On 8th February 1587 Mary was executed in the Great Hall of Fotherghay Castle.
