Artists and designers often exhibit their work, meaning it has to be presented in a way that will allow the viewer to see the original idea or intention. Artists and designers who are working to a specific brief will have to present work to clients in a clear manner in order to show they have met the brief.

Your skill is assessed in your portfolios.

Marks are awarded for showing:

  • creative use and selection of materials, techniques and/or technology (25 marks)
  • creative use of appropriate visual and expressive effects or design elements (25 marks)

Expressive portfolio

  • This portfolio should show evidence of your expressive art skills.
  • There are many techniques, some expressive and energetic, and some tightly controlled and realistic.
  • You can play to your strengths, working in your preferred range of media and techniques. For example, if you like to work in tone, rather than colour, you could focus on tonal techiques. If you love painting in colour, you could complete most or all of your studies using colour painting techniques. If pattern is your favourite thing, you could focus on this visual element.
  • Examiners appreciate many different approaches and will reward the work for skill if the chosen technique is done well.

Design portfolio

This portfolio should show evidence of your design skills in your chosen design area. Different skills are required for different design areas.

Your portfolio will have to show evidence that appropriate design elements have been understood.

For example:

  • In lighting design, this could include showing understanding of aesthetics, consideriation of health and safety and stability, selecting and experimenting with suitable materials.
  • A graphic design portfolio, should show an understanding of layout and letting, and how to use imagery to create a memorable design which communicates to the target audience.
  • In surface pattern design, examiners will expect to see good colour sense and an understanding of how to develop a motif and use different repeats to create a design which is suitable for a particular purpose.
