Developed country population structure

A population pyramid showing the percentages of the people living in the UK

Describing the pyramid

In this graph, notice the widest section being the 45-49 age group.

Age groups from 16 鈥 64 are known as the economically active as they tend to be working and paying taxes.

Compared to a developing population structure, more people are living to older age categories. The population pyramid shows a low birth rate and high life expectancy.

This pyramid shows an ageing population.

Consequences of an ageing population:

  • Too many elderly people, puts an added strain on services e.g. health care.
  • Extra money is required to build more care homes to accommodate elderly people.
  • Fewer children born means that less maternity hospitals and schools are needed.
  • People have to work longer as the age of retirement is raised.
