You run the risk of anxiety and depression if your lifestyle is too stressful and challenging.

Keep an eye on how you鈥檙e feeling. Seek help if:

  • you feel anxious, worried and overwhelmed by problems;
  • your sleeping or eating patterns change drastically;
  • you get angry for no reason;
  • you find it hard to concentrate or make decisions.

Causes and consequences of depression

Feeling sad is a natural response to many situations in our lives. Depression is different 鈥 this is sadness that does not go away, and stops you from doing the things you normally would.

Some of the things that can cause young people to become depressed include:

  • parents' divorce or separation;
  • unplanned pregnancy;
  • a death of a loved one;
  • feeling rejected from their family;
  • problems with schoolwork;
  • moving house and changing schools;
  • friendship problems;
  • an illness in the family;
  • drug and alcohol abuse;
  • a family history of depression;
  • poverty or homelessness.

When you鈥檙e depressed, it seems as though no one could understand, however there are many people who have overcome depression with the right help.
