Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations have issued 17 ambitious goals to try and build a better, fairer, and more sustainable future for the world.

Sustainable Development Goal 8 aims to ensure everyone can be employed productively in decent work. Inclusive and sustainable economic growth is a key part of this.

Globally, access to sustainable employment is crucial to improve living standards.

To improve the quality of people's lives, good safety conditions, a liveable income, and equal pay for men and women are important steps to achieving this UN goal.

Impact of Covid-19

Covid-19 has had a huge impact on workers around the world. Closing of work places and businesses has caused job losses and reduced people's incomes.

For many people, particularly those involved in informal work, loss of work has left them without any income or social protection.

Closure of schools, colleges and universities has interrupted education, making it more difficult for young people to develop the skills and qualifications they need to find work.

More than one in six young people have stopped working since the start of the pandemic. Young people who remain employed have seen their working hours cut by 23 per cent. (Source: )
