Part of HistoryElizabeth I

'[Source]' how far do they differ... (12 marks)

This question will always focus on your ability to identify similarities and differences of interpretation.

Example:

Sources B and C are both illustrations of [___]. How far do they differ and what might explain any differences?

Tip:

  1. Identify the overall impression of each and explain how they are similar or different.
  2. Select some of the details covered in each and explain how they are similar or different.
  3. Identify the tone and style of the interpretations, and explain how they are similar ordifferent.
  4. Write about the nature/purpose/audience of each interpretation - could this explain any differences?
  5. Reach an overall judgment about how far they are similar or different and why this might be.

Start by labelling (if they are images) or underlining (if they are written) aspects of the interpretations you think will help you explain similarities and differences. Creating a table to show each of these aspects and noting similarities or differences will help you to organise your writing and to compare the interpretations directly. Remember to use language like 鈥榳hereas鈥 or 鈥榦n the other hand鈥 to show you are comparing the interpretations directly to each other.

Spend around 15 to 17 minutes on a question like this. Allocate your time wisely and allow time for both planning your answer and writing your answer.
