Say it out loud
Saying a word out loud and listening to the different sounds can help you spell that word.
Beth, Kim and Patrick have made a fruit stand. Can they work out how to get the spelling right on their signs?
The three kids are at a little fruit stand that they鈥檝e made. They鈥檙e putting the finishing touches on it. They begin to make the signs for the fruits.
NARRATOR: The kids are putting the finishing touches on their fruit stand. The only things missing are the signs.
BETH: Ok, let鈥檚 make a sign for our fruit. First up is the apples. Now, what was it that Jeanie taught us.
PATRICK: She taught us to sound out the words.
KIM: Hmmm鈥 Ok. Apples. Ah-pills. Ahhhh-Pilllls.
As Kim says this she counts out the syllables by clapping along with each beat.
PATRICK: The first sound is 鈥橝p鈥. What letters do you think makes this sound?
BETH: I remember! The 鈥橝h鈥 sound is made by an 鈥橝鈥.
Beth writes down the letter 鈥檃鈥. Jeanie walks over to them.
JEANIE: Now, how are we getting on here?
PATRICK: Brilliant! We鈥檙e almost finished, we just need to make our signs.
JEANIE: Very good! What sign are you working on first?
KIM: We鈥檙e working on apples. We鈥檝e already worked out the first letter. It鈥檚 A!
JEANIE: Brilliant! Would you like some help with the rest of the word?
ALL THREE KIDS: Yes please!
JEANIE: Ok, so Apples. The first part of the word is what sound?
The word 'apples' appears beside Jeanie as she speaks.
PATRICK: It鈥檚 鈥檃p鈥!
JEANIE: Yes! And you have the first bit, the 鈥檃鈥 sound. The next bit is the 鈥檖eh鈥 sound. Can you think of what letter makes the 鈥檖eh鈥 sound, like in the word 鈥檖uppy鈥?
KIM: Oooohhhh鈥 I know, it鈥檚 the letter p, so that means that its a鈥
JEANIE: and the next part of the word isss鈥?
KIM: 鈥橮颈濒濒鈥!
JEANIE: Brilliant! yes the Pill sound starts with a鈥?
BETH: 鈥橮鈥! It鈥檚 another letter P!
JEANIE: Brilliant! You鈥檝e worked out some of the word already!
BETH: 础鈥鈥
JEANIE: Now, would you like to have a go at finishing off the word for me?
BETH: Oooh, ok. Let鈥檚 do it!
Beth writes and the other two peer over her shoulder. Beth turns around her sign that says 鈥檃ppels鈥.
JEANIE: Well done! You were very very close. The end of the word is a bit tricky, but you鈥檙e so nearly there. It鈥檚 spelled (while clapping along to each letter) A-P-P-L-E-S.
The letters are highlighted beside Jeanie as she claps them out.
PATRICK: Ah yes! I remember now, I saw that in my reading book!
Patrick places the correctly spelled 'apples' sign on the fruit stand.
