Louise Chandler and Kemi-Bo Millar Two birthday bounces for Berkshire show!By Louise Chandler Louise Chandler's show on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio Berkshire marks two years of celebrating Afro-Caribbean culture and community every Sunday night from 9pm. Here she looks back on the past few years. It's been another jam packed two years – from Mary Genis who was the very first guest on the show to Gary and Michelle from Diverzion who helped to celebrate the anniversary of the first Birthday show. This month has been a great opportunity to re-visit previous guests to find out what they've been up to since appearing on the show, in the past year. So far, we've caught up with local reggae musician I-Jay who performed live in the studio in April. Bev and her band Climate Change came in to the studio in August 2007 to perform jazz and reggae tunes and we caught up with her to find out that the band are still enjoying great success and playing at local Berkshire venues regularly. Lennox Carty wished the show a 'Happy Birthday' by dedicating the Bob Marley track Don't Rock My Boat and also told you about his music poetry album he's releasing for Black History Month this year. During the past year I've been proud to have guests from our community. In January it was all about 'New year new you' with guests such as lifestyle coach Marigold Nunes, hairdresser Maxine Small and Dance Teachers Kimberley and Rhona. In March Jackie Daniel and Jeff Hinds came in to the studio to talk about the Drugs and Weapon's conference they organised to get the community involved in taking action. Donette Buckridge bravely shared her experiences of and encouraged listeners to be brave and acknowledge the problem. The show caught up with Rusty Lee about her cookery book and I was honoured to talk music with Ruby Turner. Legendary Reggae music label Greensleeves celebrated its 30th Anniversary in November and founding member Chris Cracknell came in to the studio to share his favourite songs and reminiscence about the hits! All of these topics have provided a fantastic opportunity for members of the community to share their stories and experiences with the rest of Berkshire and to give you the chance to learn more about our community and culture. We've even kept up with events in the Caribbean with Live Link-up's from the Trinidad carnival to St Patrick's Day celebrations in Montserrat to name a few. Telling storiesThe show has been lucky enough to be involved with local events such as the Reading Community Carnival. Despite the rain and wind, Kemi and I were able to provide exciting coverage of the day and enjoy the festivities. Empire Windrush, 1948 June was the 60th anniversary of the SS Empire Windrush arriving in England. This was a great chance for the show to reflect on the contributions that the Afro-Caribbean community made to England and indeed Berkshire. The Windrush Generation: Look How Far We've Come series of documentaries paid homage to those who arrived from 1948 to help revive the country after the Second World War. Local contributors included retired nurse Shirley Graham Paul, ex-cricket player Leo Jones and magazine publisher Keith Seville who shared their stories and insights. Throughout the year Kemi has updated you with upcoming events, from parties to theatre shows, seminars and gigs, and you've been giving us your updates. Keep them coming! Kemi loves to know what's going on in your world and only you can tell us.
The show isn't the only thing celebrating its birthday! ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio Berkshire helped to launch the UK Black Podcast a year ago and it's still going strong!
