School Report: Maidenhead

Pupils from a boys school in Maidenhead held a practice day for the 成人快手 School Report, where they tackled a subject they believe is targeted at girls: contraception. 成人快手 Radio Berkshire's Maggie Philbin visited Desborough School to find out more.

成人快手 News School Report gives 12 and 13-year-olds from UK schools the chance to make their own video, audio or text-based news at school and to broadcast it for real.

The big day is Thursday 13 March 2008 and one of the schools taking part is Desborough School.

The all-boys school in Shoppenhangers Road, Maidenhead have been practising covering a school report all about contraception.

See their video reports here:

The boys are fed up that most contraceptive advice is geared towards girls.

They have been hard at work with 成人快手 over the past few days, scripting, interviewing and preparing vox pops.

So what have they found out and how did they decide to come up with this topic? 成人快手 Radio Berkshire's Maggie Philbin headed down the school on Friday 1 February to find out.

Pupil Mick said: "We thought from a boy's point of view it would be a good subject to touch on because we're teenager and we want to know about contraception.

Pupil Zack added: "We thought we should be taught about STDs in more detail in our year nine because we don't know much about it."

The boys chose this subject following a story they read about in the newspapers.

Pupil Fred said: "It was the story about how a girl had gone to a clinic without any parent or guardian and she managed to purchase the morning after pill without any medical observation. She was only 12."

Pupil Matt said: "We looked on the Internet about underage contraception and we found out that there's no legal age to buy contraception, which broadened out story because you have to have a legal age to buy the morning after pill."

The pupils were given training on how to prepare news pieces for TV, radio and online.

Omar has chosen to be the cameraman and is very confident about handling the technology:

"It was really easy because all you had to do is find a position, put the camera on and then just sit back and watch. Then there's the sound level you've got to watch out for because if it goes too high you've got to stop recording."

Jane Winder from 成人快手 News School Report was also at Desborough School and she told Maggie:

"What we found really amazing is that the take of 13-to-14-year-old children is certainly different from an adult or a much younger child. And there's quite a gap in the news reporting for this age group.

She added: "They have interests that are very different. For example the story today is a very interesting story. It's a male take on a story that is often about females.

They've approached it in a very sensible way, there's been no giggling or silliness going on. They're totally grown up about it."

Watch this space for Desborough School's report on Thursday 13 March.
