Maggie Philbin

Catch up with Maggie Philbin on the Andrew Peach show, each weekday from 7am til 10am. She's always out and about so you never know, she might just pop up on your street!

Maggie Philbin

Maggie's TV career began when she landed herself the role of presenter on Multi-Coloured Swap Shop, but she's best known for the years she spent on the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ's Tomorrow's World series.

Now you can find Maggie on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio Berkshire each morning - if you know where to look! She's out and about across the county each day so keep your eyes peeled...

What makes you laugh?

"Anything. The unexpected. As long as no canned laughter follows it... I don't like being told when to laugh. I really want to laugh when I know I can't."

What’s your most embarrassing moment on air?

"Where do I start?"

Where is your favourite place in Berkshire?

"The top of Coombe Gibbet. Inkpen hill has glorious views across Berkshire, North Hampshire, Wiltshire and Oxfordshire, especially early on summer mornings when there's mist in the valleys either side of the downs. Very, very lovely."

What are your most memorable jobs before working for ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio Berkshire?

"I've been lucky enough to work with some brilliant people - "Swap Shop" was my first job and Noel was wonderfully relaxed and witty. "Tomorrow's World" was impressive for its journalism and brilliant editor, Richard Reisz, who I consider my professional mentor. "Hospital watch" was ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Outside Broadcasts at its most impressive - four of us onscreen but 160 camermen, lightingÌý and sound technicians making live "fly on the wall" television. Along the way I've collected some very close friends who continue to make my life outside Radio Berkshire very memorable!"

What’s your favourite piece of music?

"Changes all the time. I'm very fickle."

Hi Maggie, good to hear you sometimes on Berks Radio. I believe you suffered from osteoporosis and may be interested in some web links on the subject? In particular the myth that milk helps bones 'because it contains calcium'.From the work of Corentin Louis Kervran on biological transmutation (1960) it is the silica and magnesium content that become bone calcium by means of the body's bacteria. You can find this at Thoth Vol VI, No 6, Sept 30, 2002: MICROBES IN GEOLOGY (continued from THOTH VI-5) By Earl Staelin (para 24+). Hope you find this useful. Give the old guy some recognition, since he never got his Nobel Prize in time. Good health! Happy 2010. chris.phillips-uk@ntlworld.com

Maggie,The Quest begins…Come to Hungerford in Berkshire and join in the exciting Quest for the Hungerford Jewel. This unique Jewel has been handcrafted from 18ct gold and Sterling silver set with Aquamarines and Moonstones and is valued at £4,000. The Jewel shows iconic symbols that represent the history of this beautiful Berkshire town.To win the Jewel, you will need to visit Hungerford and solve 12 clues. The clues will be released in three sets of four at monthly intervals and will be available from 24th June, either online at www.hungerfordquest.com or from The Hungerford Bookshop situated in the High Street. Total cost for all clues is £10 (£11 online). The Hungerford Chamber of Commerce originally conceived the idea as a way to bring more visitors to the town with the added bonus of any profit from the sale of the clues, going to a number of local good causes and charities. To be able to claim the Jewel, all twelve clues have to be answered correctly, which will then reveal the location and name of 'The Keeper of the Jewel'. The Keeper will then ask a final question, which if answered correctly will end the Quest and enable the winner to claim the Jewel. The Hungerford Jewel will be on display during normal opening times at Furr & Company Jewellers at 7 Bridge Street, Hungerford. It is important to note that all answers to the clues are easily accessible, are in plain sight within Hungerford and that The Jewel is not buried or hidden, and does not require the use of metal detectors or digging equipment!Have some fun in Hungerford and join in The Quest for the Hungerford Jewel.Good hunting and don’t forget to tell your friends.

HI Maggie. I heard you on the radio this morning talking about your hayfever symptoms. I am a kinesiologist in Newbury and I specialise in treating allergies. No matter what I'm treating, one of the main side effects of the treatment people remark about is how their hay fever symptoms clear up as well. I would be really happy to offer you a course of treatment for you to report back on. You can contact me on info@theallergyspecialist.com. My web address is www.theallergyspecialist.comKindest regards

Hi MaggieI trust all is well with you.The allotment down at Scours Lane is looking great now. I do hope you and Colin manage to come down again in August. My reason for contacting you now: the government has put up some money for inter-generational projects, young working with old. If successful the money will go to Reading Borough Council, but a slice will come to Age Concern.I think I probably already mentioned to you the idea of a week-long Reading Festival of Ages (which Sir Michael Parkinson has agreed to help with). The idea would be to have a series of projects / activities that would culminate in the week’s Festival. I wondered if you had any bright ideas for a project / activity? Maybe technology related, the arts etc? It would be great to have you and ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio Berkshire on board. If this is not your scene, do feel free to pass on to others.Have a great weekendRichard (Stowell)Age Concern Berkshire

Hello MaggieAs you're always out & about PLEASE could you spare some time to start The Bracknell & District Alzheimer's Memory Walk at Wellington College, Crowthorne on Sept 13th. This will be part of the National Alzheimer's Memory Walk with all money raised locally going to the local branch. This is the first time the Bracknell Branch have organised a sponsored walk. Last year over £400,000 was raised throughout England. The money raised will be spent on the respite facility we provide to enable carers to get a break while the sufferers are provided with stimulating activities, outings & lunch. We also hold monthly Carers Lunch & Support Group Lunch where current and past carers can chat & support each other. These activities often include a speaker. All the activities in the Bracknell Branch are run entirely by volunteers. I do hope you are able to be there as I know that many of our members & fundraisers will recognise your cheerful voice. Perhaps you could even get a group together from Radio Berkshire to join in the walk & the other fun day activities we are putting on!!!! Statistics show there are 40,000 Alzheimer's sufferes in The South East & this number is expected to double in the next 10 years.Kind Regards Clare email 7heathmoors@talktalk.net

I was listening this morning to your interview with trail junkies. I was upset, though not surprised, to hear the lady say that riding on trails was so safe you didn't need to be constantly aware of traffic etc. Well actually a lot of the trails are in fact bridleways used by horses who get very frightened when faced with fast cyclist bearing down on them or coming out from the hedgerows.I am an experienced rider, competing Nationally, but I suffered one of the worst falls ever last year when two cyclist came down a bridlepath flat out with no warning. Thanks to so many organised trail rides, like the one you were advertising for the coming weekend, it is no longer safe to ride our local bridleways at weekends and we have to ride on the roads which are actually safer. Some cyclists are aware and considerate but unfortunately the majority ride too fast and use bridleways without consideration for other users whether pedestrians or riders. In fact the cyclist who caused me to be body boarded to Royal Berks were amazed to see horses, they were not aware that horses used Bridleways.I would be grateful if we could open up this topic before someone really gets hurt. We should all be able to enjoy the countryside by behaving responsibly with regard for other users.Goring on Thames

HI Maggie,A short time ago you had a tennis lesson at Slough Tennis Centre, the council are now trying to close the centre and turn it into a bowling alley, we are a community, we have barbecues, we take in nibbles at Christmas, and by the way we are keeping fit. We have indian shops we have polish shops our schools are now single religions they are going to build single sect playcentres what about community. The Tennis centre is there for all we are a community no matter what religion or race you are, a bowling alley is not going to make anyone fit. Any support in helping us fight the closure would be appreciated.Thank you.

Paula Philbin, hi I am the late Pat Cawley's great niece, I believe his son Michael still visits Ann daily. I'm trying to trace our family tree and I believe that we are related through Eliza Philbin, who would be my Great, Great Grandmother. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated, you can find me on Facebook. I look forward to hearing from you!

Paula Philbin
Hi MaggieWe are related somewhere along the line. My father Peter Philbin lived in Derryfadda Co Mayo, as did my grandfater Peter who built the house. I am also related to Pat Cawley and my aunt is Ann Philbin who still llives in the family house in Derryfadda.

Hi Maggie, this sounds a little odd but I believe that we might be related.I don't know how but it has always been said that you were my mum's third cousin. My Granny's maiden name was Mary Cawley, she was born in Derryfadda, Bofeenaun, Ballina, Mayo. My Granny did visit a Peter Philbin once in Manchester, I think he was a teacher. I'm researching my Family tree and I am stuck on the Cawley side. My Great Uncle Pat Cawley also used to visit an Ann Philbin who also lives in Derryfadda. Yours

I certainly did and it might make it onto my "favourites" list - but not as definitely as the second in the series: "What Katy did at School"..... if you haven't read that one you've missed a brilliant description of a Christmas box of presents sent to two girls in an American boarding-school (not quite Malory Towers!)And then There's "What Katy did next"!Best wishes, PLD

I work as a volunteer at the children’s hospice and am organising a fundraising event (Families4Naomi), to take place on the afternoon of Saturday 8th September at a private flying club just outside Aldermaston Village. I’ve put a lot of effort into setting up an afternoon which includes live music, craft stalls, BBQ, beer tent, face paints, pottery painting – and more.I’m currently working on promoting the event and of course everything now depends on getting people through the gates. So far sent press releases to local papers and some radio stations have been sent out.I know you are a very busy lady, and see that you are currently promoting a Tomorrow’s World event in USA, but wondered if there’s anything you would be able to do to ‘encourage’ people to come along. Or might you even consider coming along on the day? I ask as I know you live locally to me and are a popular name hereabouts. With thanks

David Fothergill
Maggie, Do you remember filming -lady in drag- for tomorrow's world? I was the engineer you spent a day with filming in Hitchin, looking at the results of a mathematical analysis of the dragster - I still have the video! Happy times. It was lovely to have met you. Hope you are well. Regards, David

Hi ShaunUnfortunately our site is so discreet, it doesn't reveal your email address. I can't get along on the 18th, sadly, but make sure you've put the family fun day on our events website, so that presenters can give it a mention and people visiting the website can see where to go.

Hello Ms. Philbin. I am from Lubbock, Texas and have just read that you will be doing a show with Michael Ball. I would love to listen to it, but can find particulars. I would appreciate information regarding the show. Also, will it be available on "Listen Again"? Thank you very much for you help. Pat Hensley

Thanks Maggie for those early morning laughs. I notice your accent has changed in the many many years you have been presenting, perhaps a little maturer now but still nice to listen to.

You are my favorite wake up call. It is strange to hear you on the radio then see you out and about in town!
